It Went Away

Red Admiral, Kansas City
… It went away I'm sure because it wished to
kiss the world good-bye.

For seven weeks I've lived in here,
Penned up inside this ghetto.
But I have found what I love here.
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut branches in the court.
Only I never saw another butterfly.
That butterfly was the last one.
Butterflies don't live in here,
in the ghetto.
- Pavel Friedmann, 1942

I selected the poem because it is, indeed, sad. It also (to me) indicated a resilience, too. That the poem's author could still find beauty in the ghetto, I believe is a testament to the hope of a people. And the butterfly I photographed, I thought was a rare sight, considering how much of his wing was missing ... yet he's still living.

Nice one. How was the photography meet and greet?
