Art House Movie Theatre at a "Dead Mall"

Glenwood Arts, 95th & Metcalf, Overland Park, KS

Is there a dead mall in your city?

While I didn't grow in Kansas City, I have several friends who fondly remember the days when they visited the Metcalf South Shopping Mall as kids.

Today, the mall is one of 4,000 "abandoned" malls featured on Dead Malls. Not along ago, I was attending an Independent Film Fest at the Glenwood Arts Theatre (located on the back side of the mall).

I had some time to spare in between films and so decided to wander around the mall. It was weird. That's about the only way to describe it. All the lights were on and no one was home. Immaculately clean, Metcalf South boasts live plants growing and doing well in planters, pretty fountains, and the quiet sound of your solitary footsteps.

A very good reason, however, to visit this mall is to see films at Glenwood Arts, one of three independent movie theatres owned by the Fine Arts Group. Kansas City has an interesting love affair with independent movie houses--in addition to the Fine Arts, we've got the Tivoli in Westport and Screenland Theatre, which I previously photographed.

And I notice that theatre is spelled in the British way.

I remember Metcalf South. I and friends would hang out there. Back in that time anything south of 435 east/west highway was all farm land. Amazing how things change when you look back.
Ward Parkway mall was considered a dead mall. It changed and now people are coming back to it.
I remember Bannister Mall was a lively area until they started moving the poor people in the neighborhoods. It was the people from 71 highway. There houses were imminent domain.

I love that they salvaged the sign from the old first-run Glenwood theater. I saw "Star Wars" there. I also used to go to Metcalf South frequently to buy comic books from Clint's Comics.
