Missouri, Where We Roll Hay

Hay Rolls, near Hwy 92, Missouri

I have a special affinity for hay rolls. I don't know what it is, but to see a large pasture studded with hay rolls makes me feel happy.

Anyhow, yesterday we headed out to Pumpkins, Etc., located just east of Platte City. It's a simple, down-home sort of place, where there's no charge for looking at the pumpkins or for holding the extremely cute kittens. My one real beef with the place is that all the little kids latch on to the kittens and won't let other well-deserving people (me) hold them. Little bastards.

For a mere $23 (quite a bargain), we walked away with three pumpkins for the front porch, one special for pumpkin pie (you're making that one, right, Owen?), and a giant butternut squash for Owen's famous squash soup.

Umm, those aren't hay rolls. Those are giant cinnamon rolls. At least that's what the kiddies in my family think. (I wonder where they got that idea?)

Great composition and use of light. I like the dark sky. Reminds me that I'll be heading out to the prairies for Thanksgiving with my in-laws in Bremen and Hanover KS, about three hours drive northwest of KC.

I love hay rolls (and hay bales) too! So pretty in the field. Cool capture.

I don't think there are any in Detroit, though! If I find any, I'll post them.

Very beautiful photo. I find hey rolls very attractive, too. Unfortunately, I don't get to see them too often.

I agree. Always so picturesque.

Very nice composition. For me, seeing hay rolls always reminded me of looking at paintings from Jean-Francois Millet (XIXe) like time just stopped in the fields, and gave me a feeling of quietness.

I love how hay rolls (or bales!) conjure up a variety of things for all different people.

paintman, "hay" yourself. :)

Why would they leave the wheat laying around like that? Won't it get moldy?
