First Robotics First-Timer
In a previous post, I mentioned that I got to tag along on a trip to St. Louis to attend the First Robotics St. Louis Regional Competition. Owen, my adorable engineer, mentored the Grandview
High School robotics team, RoboDogs. It was their very first year, and it was a proud day: 1) they didn't come in last, and 2) they learned a lot.
This past weekend, Hale Arena hosted the Greater Kansas City Regional Competition, which is supported each year by the Kauffman Foundation.
In just under one week, RoboDogs had shed nearly 40 lbs. from their robot and made it to the semi-final rounds on Saturday afternoon. I think they were amazed at what they had accomplished and will be inspired for next year's competition.
As a spectator of the robotics competitions over the past two weekends, I, too, was inspired -- there's something really great about seeing teens' eyes light up with creativity. Aside from the technology aspects of First Robotics, it was clear that (perhaps even more importantly) this whole thing was about fostering mentorship between peers, creating a connection, and providing an environment where everyone fits in--all within a framework of what First Robotics calls Gracious Professionalism. Gee, we could use some of that at our work, right?
I'm really glad I had the opportunity to see it all! Check it out, maybe there's a team where you live. Every year, the parameters of the competition change--with teams having six weeks to design and build a robot that can compete. Here's what the kids had to do for 2008.

4 Shout-outs to Waldo Oiseau:
Super post, from text to photos to links. Thanks!
THat myst have been fun!!! My son LOVES to watch the shows on these events on tv.
These are some crazy things you are taking pictures of. I don't know why but they have nice colors. Why are those people sitting there looking athem? are they like clowns?
I guess the robots sort of are like clowns. They were quite entertaining to watch! Some of the robots were very sophisticated, while others were like bumbling clowns trying to throw big balls!
