Howling at the Moon Makes Me Cover my Ears

Howl at the Moon, Power & Light District, Kansas City, Mo.

I finally got myself down to one of the establishments of the much-talked of Power & Light District. All told, the "District" will cover eight city blocks and include restaurants, clothiers, and concert venues.

Saturday night, I went to Howl at the Moon to celebrate a friend's birthday.* It was great to see friends, but I don't think I'll be back to spend $30 to howl along with the mediocre piano players, nor to imbibe warm and cheap vodka that is served up in plastic glasses.

Truly, the best thing about the District, I am hoping, is that it will create a groundwork of bringing people to Downtown and the Crossroads. And, with that, I hope it will open opportunities for locally-owned businesses--ones that rehab existing infrastructure and bring creativity and class--to flourish.

Now I'm not saying that the District sucks. Maybe the outdoor beer garden that is planned will be great--I'm willing to give it a chance.

But so far, the $30 I spent at Shiraz the night before for a divine meal, two glasses of excellent wine, and great conversation, kicks the District's butt.

But like I said, maybe the District has more to offer .... if there's a place in the District you love, I'd like to hear what it is and why you like it!

* PS, my thoughts on the dueling piano bar are totally separate from my appreciation that the birthday girl planned a great gathering of friends to celebrate her 33rd birthday! Actually, this post probably just points out that I'm not cool enough to hang at the District. See what happens when you turn 33?

Holy smokes! $30 to get in? That's crazy. Makes me wish the Big Bang had actually beat out this place to be the dueling piano bar in the P&L district. My buddy Geoff Smith runs all their entertainment. I don't think they charge $30 for entry though as they use locals for the talent.
$30? ... wow...

There is no way you spent $30 to get in, unless you paid for eveyone. The same kind of bar in Westport charges $7 per person. You must have spent 30 the whole time you were there, right?

You're just too classy a lady for plastic cups. But I'm guessing that's what you'll get in the beer garden.

XO plays piano?

Hey, that does sorta look like XO!

The $30 fee was to be part of a reserved table (this included a spot at the table, the cover charge, and two drinks).

The thing is, on a weekend, there's no way you are going to get a place to sit unless you have a reserved table!

I'm so down to make my own burger...and if it's anything like Souperman, it will likely melt in your mouth.

Plastic cups? Hummm. I think the joint deserves a good ribbing.

Hope you are well, thanks for the link!

i was in the p/l district both thurs (angels & some mexican dump) friday (mcfaddens) and sat (vevenos was closed at 2pm!
). i have to say that i am not too eager to go back anytime soon. mcfaddens has to be the worst (food and service) sports bar ive ever been too and angels was ok, just ok. it had a chain feel to it. its exactly like the one in baltimore! saturday was completelty dead, even while ku was playing. what really gets me though is the parking or lack thereof. i would rather go to legends than downtown. there is absolutley no character in the pl at all. good luck dt! your going to need it.

Haven't been to this area in my occasional visits to KC. I hope it doesn't end up like Laclede's Landing in STL - mediocre restaurants and boisterous bars supported by 3 AM liquor licenses. Oh, and two casinos (a gigantic shiny new casino-hotel just opened). None of it for, let's say, refined tastes.

As the birthday girl, I greatly appreciated Cate's attendance. I would agree that the singing was not the best, although the fiddler was fantastic! I do want to check out the dueling piano bar in Westport.
