Blue Skies Smilin' on Me
Winstead's, Kansas City
Photographed by Mike Willis
Winstead's is sort of a institution ... an art deco burger joint you've probably never heard of unless you're from Kansas City.
Opened in 1940 with a handful of locations around Kansas City, nearly every local has a favorite Winstead's menu item. Maybe the triple steakburger? The special chocolate malt? Mine is the cherry limeade!

3 Shout-outs to Waldo Oiseau:
I think most towns either have or, unfortunately, had a place like this.
I love Winstead's. I'm particularly fond of the one near the Plaza. When I'm actually back in KC, a rare occurrence in my life, I have to go there.
Skipping out of Blue Valley North for the day, heading to the Plaza, lunch at Winstead's, getting the evil eye from Nelson Atkins Museum guards who knew I was truant, good times.
another great food place to try - any photos of the actual meal?
