Breckenridge Brewery, Colorado

My opinion holds that you can never showcase too many beers! This past Saturday we found Breckenridge Brewery. As we were hungry, and as it was lunchtime, it was perfect!

Owen favored the Christmas Ale, and I went for the Oatmeal Stout. Delicious!

Odell Brewery, Fort Collins, Colorado

Any trip to Fort Collins requires a stop in at Odell Brewery. I know, I know, I posted about this last year. But, being allowed to post about the lovely and wonderful Easy Street Wheat once a year isn't asking too much, is it?

Fort Collins, home of my where I attended college, has really come a long way. Old Town is pretty cool place ... for those of us no longer in college. We had a great dinner out and stopped in at some very good art galleries while we were there.

Bingo Night with Catholics

Basement of Holy Family, Kansas City, KS

A few weekends back, I attended Bingo Night with my friend, Kathryn, and her parents. They know "the man who makes the chili," and while they aren't Catholic, they've been enjoying the twice-yearly Bingo fundraisers at Holy Family in KCK.

Things I didn't necessarily know:
- Bingo is pretty fun.
- Catholic churches have bars--real bars--in their basements!
- Eating giant bowls of chili, topped off with delicious fritos, is not really the best thing to be eating when you are 34 years old. Your body will pay you back in short order.
- If you are smoker and you live in Kansas City, I have found the last remaining place in which smoking is still encouraged: it is the basement of Holy Family.

The Lion King was recently in town at Kansas City's Music Hall. Very cute sculptures, including zebras, and other African animals were erected across the street!

Election Night Fireworks in Waldo!

I knew it was a good idea to save some of those sparklers from 4th of July! I feel like we just handed an olive branch to the rest of the world.

When all the fireworks are spent and the confetti has been swept up from the streets, it'll be time for our new President and administration to roll up their shirt-sleeves.

What I have personally found most inspiring about this election, is our participation and our interest in the world around us. It's not longer a big, wide world. The world is, in fact, quite small. Will Obama "save" America? Is he the "Shining Light" of whatever? Of course not.

So, where will change really come from? It'll have to be from you. It'll have to be from me.

Barack Obama talked about the kind of place I want to live. However, it's ultimately up to me, and it's up to you, to create that reality, to create the kinds of communities we want, the kind of relationships we want with each other and with the rest of the world.

In the words of someone I go to for inspiration, "Be the change you wish to see in the world."

It's going to be Barack Obama's job to run the government. That's what we hired him to do for the next four years.

It's going to be our job to create the kind of place we want to live and prosper.

Presidential Election in Kansas City

Early Morning Election Line in Waldo, Kansas City

Yes, we got up even before the sun did in Waldo, Kansas City. I was very proud of the bluehairs who run this particular voting site near where I live. They were movin' people through with a speed I've never seen from them before.

As I walked across the blacktop to get in line, I actually felt a little emotional to see so many people coming out to vote (in the photo above, the line continues behind me).

I voted for Barack Obama. I think that because of him, so many more folks are voting in this election. People, including myself, are starting to have faith (at least a little bit) in politics again, and I hope that if Obama wins this election, he will run an administration that truly does make change for the better.

Frida at Home, Kansas City

Happy Halloween! I would have posted a picture of my beautiful pumpkins, but the $#%^ squirrels ate them. All that's left on the front porch or two stubby pumpkin tops. So, instead, you get a photo of a BLACK CAT. BOO.

Weekend plans? Who, me? I am going to dinner with the fiance. Let me tell you, this is big. Dinner out. On the weekend. Then to see "Religulous."

Apparently, this weekend is all about photography! Tomorrow I have a family photo shoot of some friends. I'm really excited for this, because I mostly photograph babies, so this will be something newish--tossing adults into the mix! On Sunday, I have a photo shoot with Average Jane and her band. How cool, huh?

We'll also be hitting the Home Show at Bartle Hall, because there is nothing like finding out that all the stuff we need to fix on our home is very, very expensive. The one highlight of going to the Home Show, however, might be a stop in at Hudson Home where they have the lovely and beautiful Heath Ceramics dishes on display. We haven't decided on whether or not to do a wedding registry--since being in our 30s, we pretty much have everything we need. But, I am thinking maybe we NEED Heath dishes? Perhaps so. I imagine using these lovely dishes everyday for the rest of our lives.

... hmmm, sounds grim, no?

Craftboy Workshop in Brookside, Kansas City

Last weekend, I attended a Communiversity class on letterpressing. Chuck Harper, aka Mr. Craftboy, came by an excellent Vandercook press several years. This was a great class--letterpressing is all the rage these days! Chuck showed us the basics of letterpressing and then we went to work, creating our own cards. Very cool.

And, not that this has to do with anything at all, but here's my current favorite song:

When I went to the American Royal BBQ a few weekends ago, I stopped in at Good JuJu--a cute antiques/knick-knack shop in the West Bottoms. Alas, I am still on the hunt for vintage champagne glasses.

What are you up to this lovely Fall weekend? Me? I'm going to learn to letterpress at The Craftboy Workshop in Brookside. I have two parties to attend tomorrow night, and if I have any extra time, I have to plant spring bulbs and continue looking for a wedding dress! Apparently, six months is "cutting it close." Geez.

Barack Obama Rally, Kansas City

This past Saturday, I stood in line for three hours for the Barack Obama Rally at Kansas City's Liberty Memorial. With an estimated 75,000 citizens in attendance, I obviously did not get there early enough to see the man himself. BUT, I heard him loud and clear through the speakers, while I and thousands of other hung out on the lawn in front of the Memorial.

More than anything, it was great to just people-watch -- seeing all ages and races excited about the prospect of Barack Obama being our next president. I can tell you, I have been as disillusioned by politics as the next gal. However, I am hoping that whoever becomes our next president will really be in a position to follow through on statements and promises made to the American people.

Regardless of who becomes president, one thing that Obama has been using in his stump speech this past week touches on personal responsibility. Now, I can tell you I'm pretty much a "bleeding heart liberal," but I also believe in personal responsibility.

Anyhow, Obama noted that we need programs, saying, "I can create school programs for your child, but I can't be the parent to your child. You've got to do that."

I went to the Plaza Art Fair twice this past weekend. It was the usual fun and artistic booths sprawled across the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. One touch of artistry I hadn't seen before were these very life-like sculptures.

Island Spice @ 39th & Main, Kansas City

Who knew you could find tasty Jamaican food in the midwest? Island Spice Caribbean Restaurant, located in an old drive-thru bank near 39th & Main, serves up good jerk and curry chicken. Their Jamaican beef patties are pretty good, too, although what I was really wanting was fried plantain ... but they were out. I will definitely swing by for lunch again.
